The Academy Select program is designed for advanced competitive players entering 7th and 8th grade, who are serious about taking their knowledge of the game to the next level. Players participating in Academy Select are generally well developed in their technical skill and have a general understanding of basic tactical concepts. The Academy Select curriculum is designed to introduced more nuanced technique (different types of passes, finishing, etc.), while requiring players to think and make decisions in a more tactically demanding environment.
Academy Select players train twice a week, with regular full-sided scrimmages to allow players to implement key tactical concepts learned in game situations. Scrimmages are video-taped and players attend a monthly video analysis session in which players are asked to reflect critically on their decision-making, technical ability and options during the game. Players are also given weekly tactical homework, which consists of watching and analysing professional-level games consistent with the concepts they are learning each week.
The Academy Select curriculum is based on two three-month training modules per season:
Training Module I: August – November
Training Module II: February – May
