Specialty Clinic with U23 WNT / Seattle Reign Head Coach, Laura Harvey
On February 11-12, 2017, VIS players and select players from the Elite Academy participated in an exclusive Specialty Clinic with Laura Harvey, current U23 Women’s National Team Head Coach and Technical Director for the Seattle Reign Women’s Professional Team. Assisting Laura was Hawaii Pacific University Head Coach Gina Brewer.
Prior to joining Seattle Reign, Laura coached at Arsenal L.F.C. in England, and served as assistant coach for the England Women’s National Team at the U17-U23 levels. Laura was named FA Women’s Coach of the Year, and U.S. National Women’s Soccer League Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015.
Laura became the head coach and general manager of Seattle Reign FC in 2013 prior to their inaugural season. After finishing the year with a 5-14-3 record, Harvey made waves prior to the 2014 season with trades that included the arrival of Scottish international Kim Little. Her revamped side won the 2014 NWSL Shield, setting records in most wins (16), most goals (50), and fewest goals allowed (20). By season’s end, Laura was named the NWSL Coach of the Year.
Laura also received a huge accolade in her home country by being named FA Women’s Elite female coach of the year and overall Coach of the year for both the men’s and women’s game. She is the first female to ever be given this award. In 2015, Seattle Reign once again dominated the regular season and Laura was given the NWSL Coach of the Year award for the second straight season.
Gina just completed her fifth season at HPU, during which the team went 9-9 overall and 6-7 in PacWest action. The 2014 season marked the best performance by the Sharks under Gina as HPU posted a program-best 11 wins. Brewer has led HPU to a 44-34-9 record while at the helm.
Originally from Seattle, Washington, Gina came to Hawai’i in 2008 to be an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii. Prior to Hawai’i, Gina was an assistant at Utah State University from 2006 to 2007. Her first collegiate soccer job was at the University of Idaho as a graduate assistant from 2003-2005.
